De wereld van de kunst is enorm uitgebreid, maar heb je er ooit al bij stilgestaan dat theaterkostuumontwerper ook kan behoren tot deze wereld? Amber de Saeger is een jonge kunstenares met het diploma van kostuumontwerper op zak. Sinds vorig jaar heeft ze haar studies aan de Academie van Antwerpen afgerond en momenteel is ze bezig met haar weg te vinden in de (kunst)wereld.

“Ik denk dat ik mij zowat meer tussen de wereld van theater en kunst bevind. Dat is een brug dat ik bewust probeer te leggen. Vooral omdat in de academie theaterkostuum beschouwd werd als een richting dat niet zo echt kunst is. Het is geen beeldende kunst. Ik vond dat een onterechte scheiding, daarom ben ik dingen beginnen doen om die brug te leggen.”

De installatie Hisstory die ik, en zovele andere mensen, mogen bezichtigen op Ithaka draait rond een actueel thema. Het kan vanuit twee manieren benaderd worden. Het kan de representatie zijn van een psychische aandoening, namelijk dissociatieve stoornis of anders uitgedrukt een meervoudige persoonlijkheidsstoornis.

Hisstory (installatie in daglicht. Ithaka had een dag volledig gewijd aan de kleine bezoekers, de kinderen. Sinds ze niet zo groot zijn, hebben we hen even flesbakken gegeven om in de truien te geraken.)

Een tweede benadering is die van Amber zelf, ze benadert het uit de hoek dat het symbool staat voor de Westerse samenleving. 

“In een samenleving die steeds meer individualistisch wordt, die ons oplegt zo veel mogelijk te doen op een zo hoog mogelijk tempo, die ons zo'n brede waaier aan keuzemogelijkheden biedt, worden we vaak praktisch gedwongen om verschillende rollen op ons te nemen. In de Westerse maatschappij kunnen we kiezen wie we willen zijn, en meer nog: wanneer we wie willen zijn.”

De installatie bestaat uit vijf sculpturale, hangende truien. Amber werkt rond het concept van de sociale maskers. Geen mens die zich niet via internet anders voordoet dan wie hij of zij werkelijk is. Dit zijn de sociale maskers die we onszelf opleggen. Amber gaat dit concept sterker maken door een paradox van acteurschap toe te voegen. Op elk van de truien die te zien zijn op Ithaka gaat ze een (onbekende) acteur Tim Bosman plaatsen. “Bovendien is het een commentaar op de heersende sterrencultus (die geparodieerd wordt door iemand onbekend af te beelden) en de zelfobsessie die sociale media teweeg brengt – nog nooit vonden we onszelf zo interessant.”

Door de specifieke opstelling van de truien kan je als het ware in de huid kruipen van deze persoon. In de truien spelen zich audiofragmenten af die ervoor zorgen dat je hier moet intreden. Door de gezichten op de truien en de geluidsfragmenten worden de verschillende facetten van éénzelfde persoonlijkheid gerepresenteerd.

Inspiratie voor haar Hisstory haalt ze bij Guy Debord zijn Spektakelmaatschappij. 

Amber haalt haar inspiratie uit het alledaagse, “het alledaagse inspireert mij heel erg, het abnormale wat niet normaal is. Ook sociale structuren, hoe mensen met elkaar omgaan. Het idee dat het leven een theaterstuk op zich is.”

Uiteindelijk restte nog de vraag of ze enige toekomstprojecten in haar hoofd heeft rondzwerven. “Het is nog een proces dat in zijn beginschoenen staat. Ik zou graag iets doen met de vluchtelingencrisis dat er nu is. Ik wil die mensen op de één of andere manier graag een stem wil geven, dat is een idee aan het opborrelen is en waar ik beginsels voor heb. Ik wou iets doen met kunst dat op een bredere laag nuttig aanvoelt. Je kan kunst maken dat nuttig is voor jezelf, maar het is leuk om dat te combineren met iets dat zo maatschappelijk heel nuttig aanvoelt.”

The world of art is quite extensive, but did you ever imagine that theatercostume design was a part of that world? Amber De Saeger is a young artist that has a degree of theatercostume design. Since last year she completed her studies at the Academy of Antwerp and she's currently finding her way in the (art)world.

“I think that I see myself between the worlds of art and theater. That is a bridge I try to built consciously. Especially because the academy of theater costume is considered as something not to be related with the arts. It is not visual art. I personally find it an unjustified separation, that's why I began to built that bridge.”

The installation Hisstory that I, and many others, had the opportunity to view at Ithaka, revolves around a current theme. It can be seen in two ways. It can be a representation of psychological disorder, therefor dissociative disorder or in another words, a multifunctional personality disorder.

Another approximation is that of Amber herself, she approaches it from the angle of the Western society.

“In a society that starts to be more individualistic, that imposes us to do as much as possible, that gives us so many different choices, we almost get forces to take on a variety of roles. In the Western society we can choose who we want to be, even more : when we want to be that person.”

The Installation exist out five sculptural, hanging sweaters. Amber works around the concept of the social masks. There's no one that shows who they really are on the internet. These are the social masks we give ourselves. Amber is going to put a vast concept by merging it with a paradox about authorship. On each sweater that are put on display at Ithaka, there's a face of an (unknown) actor Tim Bosman. “After all it is a reaction to the prevailing star cult (that's been parodied and exposed in visual images with an unknown person) and the self obsession that the social media triggers – we've never found ourselves so interesting as we do now. ”

Because of the specific position of the sweaters you can put those on by standing in it and you sort of become the person of Tim Bosman. In the sweaters there is an audio fragment playing. The faces on the sweaters and the audio fragments represent the various facets of one personality.

The inspiration for Hisstory comes from Guy Debord his Society of the Spectacle.

Her overall inspiration comes from everyday life. “everyday life inspires me very much, the abnormal that isn't the normal. Also social structures, how people engage with each other. The idea that life is a theater on it's own.”

Finally I had to ask one question, if she has any projects in mind for the future. “It's still a process that's in it's initial shoes. I'd like to do something with the refugee crisis. I would like to give these people in one way or another a voice. That's an idea that's sort of taking form. I wanted to do something with art that feels useful on a bigger scale. You can create art that is useful for yourself, but it's nice to combine that with something that feels socially useful.”
